English Language Institute (ELI)

The English Language Institute (ELI) at Queens College (QC) is a comprehensive academic program for learning English as a second language. Established in 1945, the ELI is the oldest English language school in the City University of New York (CUNY) system and the second oldest in the entire United States. All faculty members possess graduate degrees in applied linguistics and/or teaching English as a second language.

Whether you are preparing to enter college or already in college, seeking to improve language skills in order to enhance your career, or a traveler interested in improving language skills, the ELI at QC offers programs to help you achieve your goal. Select from a range of quality, well-rounded training courses in English as a second language in either the intensive or part-time programs.

The ELI has trained more than 40,000 ESL students from 47 countries. The success of the ELI is confirmed by the great number of students who go on to study at CUNY and other colleges, universities and professional schools across the United States. Students include United Nations personnel, representatives of governments throughout the world, international business people, professionals, new and prospective citizens, and tourists.
